FromMedia's slate includes bestseller 'Founder' adaptation
A group of Chinese venture capitalists has set up FromMovie Entertainment to fund film and TV production and other areas of the biz.
FromMedia is backed by Xu Xiaoping, co-founder of the New York Stock Exchange-listed New Oriental Education & Technology Group.
The group’s first slate includes a $3 million adaptation of Chinese bestseller “Founder”; 3D toon “Dim Sum Warrior,” to be created by Singaporean filmmaking duo Yen Yen Woo and Colin Goh; and an adaptation of the popular Internet novel “Marriage-Home.”
Xu will finance the project and serve as group chairman, with former DMG executive Donny Liang as CEO.
Joining them on the board are Chen Keyi, founding partner of private equity group China Renaissance K2, and chief financial officer of Bona Intl. Film Group, Xu Liang.
The company is also involved in international sales and acquisition and international co-production, film merchandising and licensing and film theme park development. It recently created a perfume brand for Zhang Yimou’s popular romantic drama, “Under the Hawthorn Tree.”
CEO Donny Liang said he hoped FromMovie would prove how the Hollywood model can work in China. “I firmly believe that the rise of the China film industry can bring in more win-win opportunities for China, Hollywood and beyond.”
