Cartoon d’Or unveils shortlist

Toons are from France, U.K., Norway, Sweden, Estonia

LONDON — Cartoon shorts from France, U.K., Norway, Sweden and Estonia will compete for a $12,500 prize at Europe’s top animated shorts festival, the Cartoon d’Or.

The finalists, chosen from 29 prize-winners from Europe’s most prestigious cartoon fests over the past year, are Joseph Pierce’s “A Family Portrait” (U.K.), Kaspar Jancis’ “Krokodill” (Estonia), Francois Alaux, Herve de Crecy and Ludovic Houplain’s “Logorama” (France), Anita Killi’s “Sinna Mann” (Norway) and Johannes Nyholm’s “The Tale of Little Puppetboy” (Sweden).

The winner will be announced in Sopron, Hungary, on Sept. 17, during the Magyar Cartoon Forum, a platform designed to boost the co-production and distribution of European animation for television.

The Cartoon d’Or was created in 1991 by the Magyar Cartoon Forum’s organizers, Brussels-based non-profit organization Cartoon, to promote the talents of European animation and to act as a pipeline between short filmmakers and the industry. Previous winners include Nick Park, Sylvain Chomet, Mark Baker, Michael Dudok de Wit and Jacques-Remy Girerd.
