Breillat’s ‘Beauty’ to open Horizons

Hong Sang-soo's 'Oki's Movie' to close Venice section

ROME — Gallic helmer Catherine Breillat’s “Sleeping Beauty” and South Korean helmer Hong Sang-soo’s “Oki’s Movie” will bookend the Venice Film Festival’s Horizons section dedicated to cutting-edge cinema.

Breillat’s take on the tale is her second adaptation of a Charles Perrault fable after her well-received “Bluebeard.” Produced by Jean-Francois Lepetit’s Flach Film Prods., Breillat’s feature will world preem on the Lido Sept. 2.

The fest hailed Breillat, who was a Venice jury member in 2007, as “one of the most important observers of the themes of desire and sexuality in our time.”

“Oki’s Movie,” about a young helmer, his old film teacher and the beautiful Oki who is caught between them, follows Hong’s “Ha Ha Ha,” which took Un Certain Regard’s prize in Cannes in May.

Produced by Hong’s Jeonwonsa shingle and sold internationally by Finecut, “Oki’s Movie” will unspool Sept. 11, the helmer’s first time in Venice.

As previously announced, Venice topper Marco Mueller this year is opening the Horizons section to small and large formats to make it more of a laboratory.
