6 filmmakers picked for Cannes plan

Cinefondation Residence offers help in developing products

Mexico’s Michel Franco (“Daniel and Ana”) and Chile’s Cristian Jimenez (“Optical Illusions”) are among six directors who have been selected for the Cannes Film Festival’s 20th Cinefondation Residence.

The 20-week Paris-based Residence offers filmmakers accommodation and E800 ($1,100) a month to work on their projects, with directors and producers offering advice on writing and development through to production. This edition runs until July 15. Franco broke through with feature debut “Daniel,” a study of the shattering effects of kidnapping on a brother and sister, which played last year’s Cannes Directors’ Fortnight. It is sold by Fortissimo.

“Lucia,” Franco’s second feature, turns on a father obsessed by the death of his wife, to the point of ignoring their son. Jimenez, whose Films Boutique-sold “Illusions” preemed September in San Sebastian’s Horizontes Latinos, promises another dramedy of sharp social observance in “Bonsai,” the story of the relationship between two literature students.

Also selected are Copenhagen-based Daniel Borgman, whose short “Lars and Peter,” played in Cannes Competition last year, and Israel’s Yaelle Kayam, whose short, “Diploma,” won third prize at the Cinefondation Selection last year.Borgman’s first feature, “The Weight of Elephants,” is a coming-of-age drama. Kayam’s “Providence” is a black comedy set in a West Bank settlement.

Father-son drama “Gente de bien,” from Colombia’s Franco Lolli, and family road movie “De jueves a domingo,” from Chile’s Dominga Sotomayor, round up this year’s Residence projects.

The twice-yearly Residence was started by Cannes president Gilles Jacob in 2000.
