Kazach project to be directed by Nariman Turebayev

ROME — “Sunny Days,” a project centered around a 25-year-old outcast contending with adversity, by Kazach helmer Nariman Turebayev, took the top prize at the Locarno Open Doors Factory co-production lab dedicated this year to cinema from Central Asia.

“Sunny Days” won a production grant worth 50,000 Swiss Francs ($47,000) provided by the fest.

“Aral,” a project from Uzbekistan by Ella Vakkasova, about a 10-year-old runaway boy, won a grant for development from Gaul’s CNC worth Euros 7,000 ($9,000); and “Barzagh,” a family drama based on helmer Saodat Ismailove’s real life, also from Uzbekistan, was awarded a development from Arte worth Euros 6,000 ($7,800).

The Locarno fest ends Aug. 14.
