Star renews deal with Media Asia

Company signs with Media Prima Berhad

HONG KONG — News Corp.’s Star Greater China has announced a series of deals on the fringes of the Filmart festival in Hong Kong, aimed at underlining its ambitions in the still booming Asian region.

Star renewed an output deal between its Chinese movie unit Star Chinese Movies and leading Hong Kong shingle Media Asia, which gives Star Chinese Movies exclusive pay TV and video-on-demand rights to Media Asia’s latest blockbusters and award-winning films in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau.

Star also announced a multi-year licensing renewal deal with Media Prima Berhad, the leading integrated media investment group in Malaysia.

Star Chinese Movies has a slate of output deals with Emperor Motion Pictures and China Star, and the group will also bow the first Chinese-language production co-produced by Fox, Huayi Brothers and Star, “Hot Summer Days,” which has made close to $20 million in total box-office receipts.

Among the forthcoming Media Asia titles to be aired on Star Chinese Movies will be Lu Chuan’s “City of Life and Death” and Johnnie To’s “Vengeance and Accident.”

The group’s Fortune Star library is the world’s largest contemporary Chinese film library with more than 750 titles, featuring superstars Jackie Chan, Chow Yun Fat and Bruce Lee, among others. It also owns 17.6% of Phoenix Satellite TV Holdings.

Under the Malaysian deal signed with Media Prima Berhad, Media Prima will license from Star the television rights to more than 20 Fortune Star Library blockbusters, including Bruce Lee classic “The Fist of Fury,” three Jet Li titles and seven Jacky Chan titles. The titles will be shown on Media Prima’s four free-TV channels, TV3, 8TV, TV9 and NTV7.
