Toon also came top in video, DVD release
TOKYO — Hayao Miyazaki’s 1984 toon “Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind” has sold 20,000 Blu-ray discs in its first week of release, topping the chart and becoming the first title to debut at No.1 in all three home entertainment formats in Japan.
The toon, widely considered by Miyazaki fans to be among his best work, bowed on top when it was released on video in September 1997 and on DVD in November 2003.
“Nausicaa,” an environmentally themed sci-fi toon that was instrumental in launching the boom for Japanese anime in the West, earned only $8.4 million in its theatrical run. By comparison, Miyazaki’s “Spirited Away” finished with $345 million.
