‘Mother’ takes grand prize at Deauville

Rodrigo Garcia pic stars Annette Bening

The Deauville American Film Festival wrapped Sunday with a screening of its grand prize winner, Rodrigo Garcia’s “Mother and Child.”

Selection heaped further glory on Annette Bening, who plays one of three women in the film coming to terms with challenging parental relationships. A guest of honor at Deauville this year, she also presented “The Kids Are All Right” and a retrospective of her work.

Jury, led by Gallic thesp Emmanuelle Beart, made no secret of its difficulty agreeing on which films to bestow kudos.

Split was evident in its second prize, awarded jointly to Debra Granik’s grim Sundance winner “Winter’s Bone” and David Robert Mitchell’s teen romance “The Myth of the American Sleepover.”

A separate jury awarded the Cartier Revelation prize for most promising newcomer to Kevin Asch for “Holy Rollers.”

The 36th edition of the fest had a strong TV bent, opening with a weekend devoted to U.S. drama series. Unseen and classic episodes were screened, while French and American script writers met to discuss their craft. “The Sopranos” creator David Chase and “Dexter” showrunner Clyde Phillips gave master classes.

Fest topper Bruno Barde expressed satisfaction with this first venture into TV, saying he would go further next year. Alongside Bening, helmers Terry Gilliam and Gregg Araki received tributes.
