Swedish box office rises 22%

Local pics nab 33% thanks to 'Millennium' trilogy

STOCKHOLM — 2009 was a record year at the Swedish box office with the total gross up 22% at $212 million.

U.S. films had a market share of 54%, with Swedish films coming in second with a record 33%, according to figures from the Swedish Film Institute.

The B.O. for local films was largely made up of the combined gross of the “Millennium” trilogy from production company Yellow Bird: “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” “The Girl Who Played with Fire” and “The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest” took spots one, two and six in the list of the year’s most successful films.

“Dragon Tattoo” took $15.6 million and “Girl Who Played with Fire” nabbed $13.4 million, while “Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince” was third top seller with $10 million, “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs” was fourth with $7.7 million and local comedy “Midsummer of Love” came fifth with $6.4 million.
