Van Jones gets President’s Award

Green activist recognized by Image Awards

“The idea that we can create a green wave that will lift all boats and create green jobs for all Americans is a continuation of the civil rights struggle,” says “green revolutionary” Van Jones, explaining how his 2008 book “The Green Collar Economy” links a call for more green business with a desire to see minority communities benefit from that growth.

A Yale Law School grad who served on President Obama’s White House Council on Environmental Quality before resigning amid controversy last fall, Jones says, “I’ve been working for 20 years in tough, disadvantaged communities trying to bring solutions forward. The movement for green jobs means more wealth and better health for all.”

Jones has done more than simply write about these issues. As the founder of Green for All, he is working toward achieving many of the goals set down in his book and describes himself as “the most outspoken national champion for that.”

Both a man of action and a public intellectual, Jones expects to pick up his pen again soon, though he declines to say exactly when. “I’m sure I’ll write some more,” he says. “We have real serious problems in American now, and serious problems require serious discussions. I want to stay focused on those problems.”
