KFWB Throws in the Towel on News, Goes Talk

Hey, when I wrote that KFWB-AM (980)’s Hollywood-news approach stank in a recent post, my goal wasn’t to make the station bail out on the news format entirely.

Yet that’s what the venerable CBS-owned station has done, announcing that it will go to a news/talk format starting in September with Dr. Laura Schlesinger (currently heard on KFI-AM 640), Laura Ingraham and Michael Smerconish as the nationally syndicated blatherers anchoring its talk-heavy lineup.

This leaves sister station KNX-AM 1070 as the market’s one all-news (sort of) station, and even that isn’t what it used to be.

Great, just what we need; more over-heated talk, less under-heated news. Pick your poison … and a rather sad sign of the times.

Here’s the revised KFWB lineup starting Sept. 8:

6:00-9:00AM: Local News hosted by Phil Hulett and Penny Griego

9:00AM-12:00Noon: Laura Ingraham

12:00Noon-3:00PM: Dr. Laura

3:00-6:00PM: Local Talk/News (host TBA)

6:00-9:00PM: Michael Smerconish

“…just what we need, more overheated talk”, blah blah. i love people lament talk radio, and it’s slant rightward. that is what we are talking about, right brian?
if only the president and congress would step in and set free speech limitations, and impose strict regulations on tone, temperment and topics.
or, maybe mr. lowry, could buy his own radio station and create the kind of station he wants to hear.
the sign of the times, mr. lowry, is that we the listener will, and should dictate what we listen to, and not some smug whiner who only complains about those voices he does not agree with.
gee, where can i find randi rhodes on the dial? her show is so popular and her ratings are so through the roof, that i just can’t get advertising time during her show, darn. the los angeles market has certainly chased laura ingraham around the dial, right? ratings, commerce, and entertainment are the watchwords. otherwise, go to public funded pacifica, snoozers.
