Replaced news anchor bashes Aussie network
Grizzled news vets usually subscribe to the adage “Whatever goes around, comes around.“
Veteran Oz newsreader Jim Waley, 61, dumped by Nine Network in 2004 for a younger anchor, has started to speak out against the broadcaster after a contractual gag order was finally lifted. Now with Foxtel’s Sky News, he said that Nine was “fighting for its life.”
He may be further emboldened by the fact that his youthful replacement, Mark Ferguson, didn’t work out and was sacked in favor of another old-timer, Peter Overton.
It would be easy to conclude that Waley has had the last laugh, but in taking his new gig at Sky, he has bumped a fellow news vet, John Gatfield, who has posted his own angry response on online forum the Media Spy, saying that the network can’t afford him.
