New Showtime series gets big kick-off
HOLLYWOOD — A day after picking up his Cecil B. DeMille honor at the Golden Globes, Steven Spielberg arrived at the DGA Monday to tubthump his new Showtime series, “The United States of Tara.”
“I like family stories, and a lot of my films have been about families in critical situations,” explained Spielberg. ” ‘Tara’ is about a family coping and giving support to a mother with a multiple personality disorder.”
So who does one hire to write such edgy material? Someone who knows a thing or two about offbeat characters, such as Oscar-winning “Juno” scribe Diablo Cody. But Cody admitted that taking on “Tara” was a very different experience for her.
“I’m not a mother, I don’t have a multiple personality disorder, and I’ve never lived in Kansas,” she said. “I don’t think of myself as being that family friendly, but I’m getting really accustomed to Tara’s family, the Gregsons.”
