Former sportscaster joins L.A. news team

Former KTTV sportscaster Rick Garcia, who signed off from the Fox-owned station on Monday, is joining crosstown rival KCAL.

In what may be one of the quickest station-to-station leaps in recent memory, Garcia was set to sign on at the CBS-owned independent Thursday night. He’ll anchor the 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. newscasts alongside KCAL vet Pat Harvey.

Garcia replaces Sandra Mitchell, who had been anchoring alongside Harvey since the departure of Rick Chambers from the station. Mitchell continues at KCAL.

“Recruiting Rick Garcia represents a major addition to our news team,” said KCBS/KCAL president-general manager Patrick McClenahan. “In addition to being a charismatic and intelligent broadcaster, I am very impressed by Rick’s deep roots in the community.”

Garcia spent 22 years at KTTV, having served as the station’s weekday sports anchor since April 1988. He also spent time anchoring the newscast at sister station KCOP.
