‘Dance,’ ‘Talent’ continue to top ratings

Fox, NBC top night with reality shows

Fox’s consistent hoofing hit “So You Think You Can Dance” delivered Wednesday’s top demo rating in primetime, while NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” remained the evening’s most-watched program overall.

On a somewhat lackluster night ratings-wise, “So You Think You Can Dance” held steady with a 2.9 rating/9 share in adults 18-49 and 7.6 million viewers overall, according to preliminary nationals from Nielsen. Airing from 8 to 10 p.m., it once again accounted for all of Fox’s primetime lineup on Wednesday and led each half-hour in key under-50 demo categories.

NBC was runner-up on the night, with “America’s Got Talent” (2.7/8 in 18-49, 10.9 million viewers overall) placing a close second to Fox’s “Dance” in demos during the 9 o’clock hour while easily drawing the most total viewers for any program. The Peacock network also received decent numbers from a “Talent” repeat at 8 p.m. (1.5/5 in 18-49, 6.4 million viewers overall) and firstrun drama “The Philanthropist” at 10 p.m. (1.4/4 in 18-49, 5.0 million viewers overall), with the latter up slightly over its last two airings.

ABC placed a solid second in Wednesday’s opening hour with a repeat of “Wipeout” (2.1/7 in 18-49, 6.7 million viewers overall) before dropping some with “I Survived a Japanese Game Show” (1.4/4 in 18-49, 3.8 million viewers overall) and newsmag “Primetime: Crime” (1.3/4 in 18-49, 4.8 million viewers overall).

CBS had a typically ho-hum Wednesday with repeats of its comedies “The New Adventures of Old Christine” (1.1/4 in 18-49, 4.3 million viewers overall) and “Gary Unmarried” (1.1/4 in 18-49, 4.2 million viewers overall) and dramas “Criminal Minds” (1.5/5 in 18-49, 6.2 million viewers overall) and “CSI: NY” (1.5/5 in 18-49, 6.5 million viewers overall). “CSI: NY” was a narrow winner in most categories during the evening’s 10 p.m. hour.

CW, which has not even been on the ratings map this summer, continues to see its best numbers on this night, with a pair of “America’s Next Top Model” repeats averaging a 0.5/2 in 18-49 and 1.2 million viewers overall. The new season of “Model” kicks off Sept. 9.

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: Fox, 2.9/9; NBC, 1.9/6; ABC, 1.6/5; CBS, 1.4/4; Univision, 1.3/4; CW, 0.5/2.

In total viewers: Fox, 7.6 million; NBC, 7.4 million; CBS, 5.7 million; ABC, 5.1 million; Univision, 3.3 million; CW, 1.2 million.
