‘Dance’ doesn’t miss a beat

Fox reality series nabs 7 million viewers Thursday

Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance” continues to dominate the Thursday race as only eight finalists now remain on the popular summer reality series. The skein gave Fox a narrow win over CBS, which was the leader for the night in total viewers.

“Dance” (2.5 rating/8 share in the 18-49 demo, 7 million viewers) had more than enough to defeat the night’s other reality skein, the Eye’s “Big Brother” (1.9/7, 5.5m), which fell 17% from last Thursday’s premiere. “Bones” (1.4/5, 5m) filled the 8 p.m. slot for Fox.

At 10 p.m., “The Mentalist” (1.8/6, 8.3m) was the night’s most-watched show, picking up nearly a million viewers from “CSI” (1.5/5, 7.4m) an hour earlier.

Hoping to ride a wave of “Harry Potter” enthusiasm — the film dominates the box office this week — ABC didn’t get much traction out of the 8 p.m. special focusing on the book’s author, “J.K. Rowling: A Year in the Life” (1.1/4, 4.3m).

NBC, which just canceled “The Listener,” looks wise in its decision to let it go. Although it improved slightly from a week ago, the 1.2/4, 3.8m the drama earned last night isn’t going to cut it.

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: Fox, 1.9/7; CBS, 1.7/6; Univision, 1.6/5; NBC, 1.2/4; ABC, 0.9/3; CW, 0.4/1.

In total viewers: CBS, 7.1 million; Fox, 6 million; Univision, 3.7 million; ABC, 3.3 million; NBC, 3.3 million; CW, 1.2 million.
