CBS' 'Big' reality series upstaged by Fox

CBS launched the 11th season of “Big Brother” Thursday night, and while the numbers were slightly up compared to last summer’s premiere, Fox narrowly won the primetime race with an elimination round of “So You Think You Can Dance” earning the best 18-49 rating of the evening.

“Big Brother” scored a 2.3 rating/8 share in the demo in the 8 o’clock hour, with 6.8 million viewers tuning in. Last year the reality series began on a Sunday and earned a 2.1/7, with 6.1 million on its first night. Other demos, including 18-34 and 25-54, were also higher for this latest go-around.

“Dance” (2.8/9, 7.7m), preceded by “Bones” (1.5/5, 5.6m), was enough to give Fox a win over CBS. The Eye came in second with “Brother” and reruns of “CSI” (1.6/5, 7.5m) and “The Mentalist” (1.7/5, 8.3), Thursday’s most-watched show.

NBC, which filled its first two hours with repeats of “The Office” and “30 Rock,” continues to be disappointed by “The Listener,” (0.7/2, 3.2m), the only original scripted show of the night.

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: Fox, 2.1/7; CBS, 1.9/6; Univision, 1.6/5; NBC, 1.1/3; ABC, 0.8/3; CW, 0.5/2.

In total viewers: CBS, 7.5 million; Fox, 6.4 million; Univision, 3.5 million; NBC, 3.0 million; ABC, 2.7 million, CW, 1.4 million.
