ABC leads in young adults; CBS strong with 'Men'

Auds rocked out with ABC’s “CMA Music Festival” on Monday, putting the net in the hunt for the night’s lead among young adults. CBS, meanwhile, remained very competitive with its all-repeat lineup.

Occupying all of primetime, “CMA Music Festival: Country’s Night to Rock” averaged a solid 2.1 rating/6 share in adults 18-49 and 7.8 million viewers overall, according to preliminary Nielsen estimates — up nicely from the 1.4 rating/3 share for last year’s event, which aired the week after Labor Day. These numbers could come down a bit in the nationals, however, since they include coverage of a preseason NFL game on the Alphabet affiliate in Minneapolis, where auds were eager to see Brett Favre in his first significant playing time with his new team.

At CBS, repeats of “How I Met Your Mother” did OK at both 8 p.m. (1.6/5 in 18-49, 4.8 million viewers overall) and 8:30 p.m. (1.7/5 in 18-49, 4.9 million viewers overall) but the net saw a spike in the night’s middle hour with “Two and a Half Men” (2.3/6 in 18-49, 8.3 million viewers overall) and “The Big Bang Theory” (2.6/7 in 18-49, 8.1 million viewers overall), with the latter again building on its demo lead-in. Closing things out was crime drama “CSI: Miami” (1.8/5 in 18-49, 7.7 million viewers overall).

NBC did little ratings-wise with repurposed episodes of USA series “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” at both 8 p.m. (1.1/3 in 18-49, 4.8 million viewers overall) and 9 p.m. (1.4/4 in 18-49, 5.7 million viewers overall) but was competitive at 10 p.m. with an original installment of newsmagazine “Dateline” (1.8/5 in 18-49, 6.1 million viewers overall).

Fox wasn’t much of a factor with encores of “House” (1.5/5 in 18-49, 4.3 million viewers overall) and “Lie to Me” (1.3/3 in 18-49, 3.8 million viewers overall).

And two weeks from their season premieres, repeats of CW sudsers “One Tree Hill” (0.6/2 in 18-49, 1.5 million viewers overall) and “Gossip Girl” (0.5/1 in 18-49, 1.3 million viewers overall) failed to do much business.

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: ABC, 2.1/6; CBS, 2.0/6; NBC, Fox and Univision, 1.4/4; CW, 0.5/2.

In total viewers: ABC, 7.8 million; CBS, 6.9 million; NBC, 5.6 million; Fox, 4.1 million; Univision, 3.7 million; CW, 1.4 million.
