'Makeover,' 'Housewives' capture night

In the first Sunday primetime without pro football since late August, ABC captured the night with strong a two-hour performance of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” and a repeat of “Desperate Housewives.”

According to preliminary Nielsen estimates, “Extreme Makeover” was the highest-rated show in the 18-49 demo with a 4.1 rating/10 share from 8-10 p.m., drawing 11.6 million viewers. The Endemol-produced skein grew as the evening went on: The first half-hour drew a 3.3/8 and the final half-hour it rose to 4.6/11.

CBS’ “Cold Case” (2.6/6, 13.3 million viewers) and a pair of episodes of “The Simpsons” (2.6/6, 5.5 million viewers) tied for second place at 8 o’clock in the demo, though “Cold Case” had more viewers than any other show for the evening, except for “60 Minutes” an hour earlier.

At 9 o’clock, a pair of telepics battled, with NBC’s Robert Halmi-produced “The Last Templar” (2.3/6, 8 million viewers) barely edging out the Eye’s Hallmark Hall of Fame presentation of “Loving Leah” (2.2/5, 11.7 million viewers) in the demo. But because Hallmark skews a much older audience, “Leah” — penned and based on the play by P’nenah Goldstein — CBS could consider this showdown a victory.

Also to the benefit of “Leah,” the movie saw a slight increase in total viewership and ratings from 9 to 10 p.m. while “Templar” fell off.

Fox’s animated skeins held well against the telepics. A repeat of “Family Guy” (3.1/7, 6.4 million viewers) was second best behind “Makeover” at 9 p.m. and “American Dad” (2.7/6, 5.7 million viewers) was second as well at 9:30.

Both telepics lost in the 10 p.m. hour to a repeat of “Desperate Housewives” (2.5/6, 6.6 million viewers).

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: ABC, 3.3/8; CBS, 2.3/6; Fox, 2.2/5; NBC, 2.1/5; Univision, 1.0/2; CW, 0.3/1.

In total viewers: CBS, 12.7 million; ABC, 9.6 million; NBC, 8.4 million; Fox, 4.9 million; Univision, 3.0 million CW, 722,000.
