Former RBI CEO named prexy local media division

Tad Smith, former CEO of Variety parent company Reed Business Information, has been named prexy of the local media division for Cablevision Systems Corp.

The newly created local media unit will encompass Cablevision’s daily newspaper, Newsday Media Group, its local News 12 Networks and other programming and interactive ventures in development. Smith’s mandate is to help Cablevision, based in Bethpage, N.Y., better integrate its various TV, print and interactive assets.

Smith reports to Cablevision chief operating officer Tom Rutledge. His appointment is effective Sept. 1.

“He is the ideal executive to build on Cablevision’s commitment to local content as a key differentiator and value add for our customers,” Rutledge said in announcing Smith’s hire.

Smith previously worked for Reed Elsevier Group since 2000, where he oversaw the print and digital media operations for Variety and such publications as Publishers Weekly, Broadcasting & Cable, Multichannel News. Before joining Reed, Smith held senior exec posts with Starwood Resorts and Hotels Worldwide and BMG Entertainment.
