‘Real Housewives’ heads to D.C.

Bravo looks to cast locals for fifth season

Bravo is developing a fifth edition of its “Real Housewives” series, to be set in Washington, D.C., and has begun scouring the area for candidates. No specific timetable for bringing the show to air has been announced.

The nonscripted franchise, focusing on the lifestyles of upper-crust women in various cities, has shifted its focus eastward since debuting with “The Real Housewives of Orange County” in March 2006. Subsequent outings have focused on women in New York, Atlanta and New Jersey.

The premiere this month of “The Real Housewives of New Jersey” drew 1.3 million viewers in the adults 18-49 demo and 1.7 million total, while part one of “The Real Housewives of New York City” reunion special garnered 2.3 million viewers. In November, an Atlanta reunion set an all-time franchise record for a single airing with 3 million.

The original “Orange County” series, which averaged more than 2 million viewers in its fourth season, continues to be the “Real Housewives” bellwether.

Locally based Half Yard Prods. (“Real Cowboys: Wyatt Earp”) is developing the D.C. version of the series for Bravo.
