Montana Artists’ Jon Furie dies

Was owner of the below-the-line agency

Jon Furie, president and owner of below-the-line agency Montana Artists, died July 18 in West Hollywood. He was 48.

Furie purchased Montana Artists in 2003 from founder Carl Bressler, who had started the agency in 1989 to represent dp’s, production designers and costume designers. The agency later added editors, line producers, vfx supervisors and other below-the-line categories.

Bressler hired Furie, who had been an independent producer, in 1996. Furie rose through the ranks and, at the time of his death, was handling features and television for the Sunset Blvd.-based agency, which employs a staff of about 20, including eight agents.

“Jon is the best below-the-line agent I ever met,” said Bressler. “He consistently demonstrated… intelligence, integrity and aggression in unrelenting support of his clients. His kindness and caring touched hundreds of clients, competitors, buyers, family members and others… none will ever forget him.”

“I knew Jon for a decade and negotiated with him on the feature-film side,” said Matt Birch, whom Furie hired from Endgame Entertainment earlier this year as Montana Artists senior veep, features. “Everyone knew him for his integrity and honesty. The plans he put into place will continue to affect hundreds of people in this business in a positive way.”

He is survived by his wife Karen, two children, his father, his mother and eight siblings.
