‘Jon & Kate’ make history for TLC

10.6 million viewers watch much-hyped episode

Jon and Kate Gosselin’s marriage failure has translated to ratings victory.

TLC posted the biggest primetime audience in its history on Monday night, as “Jon & Kate Plus 8” averaged a whopping 10.6 million viewers.

The heavily-hyped episode, in which the Gosselins confirmed that they had filed for divorce, also gave the net is best-ever adults 18-49 (6.5 million) and 18-34 (3.7 million) numbers, as well as topped out most other major demos.

As a result, “Jon & Kate” easily scored the top ratings of the night.

It wasn’t just a big story for TLC. The “Jon & Kate” seg also achieved the top ratings for any Discovery Communications network in adults 18-49, 18-34, and other demos, and the biggest audience ever for a Discovery net among 18-49, households and more.

“Jon & Kate’s” previous high was 9.8 million viewers, for its season five premiere episode at the end of May.

“Jon & Kate” also gave TLC strong numbers for the show that immediately followed, “Cake Boss.” That show averaged 4.5 million viewers, its best perf ever – and higher than any show that has aired on rival Food Network since 2000, TLC said.

After a week of speculation – brought on initially by a TLC promo — “Jon & Kate Plus 8” series stars Jon and Kate Gosselin confirmed on Monday night’s episode that they had filed for divorce in the state of Pennsylvania.

On Tuesday morning, TLC said shooting on “Jon & Kate Plus 8” would take a break in the wake of the couple’s divorce filings – but that the show would resume on Aug. 3.

Next week’s episode will be “a retrospective of Jon and Kate’s first 10 years” as a married couple, the cabler said.

“TLC continues to support the Gosselin family and will work closely with them to determine the best way to continue to tell their story as they navigate through this difficult time,” the channel said in a statement.

During the hiatus, “the family will take some time off to regroup and then a  modified schedule will be in place to support the family’s transition,” TLC added.
