Fremantle dives in with Liquid Comics

Two projects already set for this year

FremantleMedia Enterprises has made a first-look deal with Liquid Comics, the company formerly known as Virgin Comics.

Much the way that FremantleMedia has found tie-ins in other platforms for “American Idol,” “Family Feud” and its other titles, the company will turn Liquid Comics lit properties loose in multiple platforms.

The companies kick off the relationship with two projects that will be published later this year as graphic novels by Liquid Comics. The first is “Ani-Max,” about a boy who can absorb the abilities and physical characteristics of any animal he touches. It will be developed as an animated TV show. The other, “First Family,” will be developed as a scripted drama about the teen children of a newly elected American president who try to survive in a most ruthless political arena — high school.

Both properties were created by Gotham Chopra and Sharad Devarajan, Liquid Comics co-founders and managing partners, who made the deal with FremantleMedia’s Jeff Tahler. The Liquid Comics principals said the FremantleMedia deal will allow them a faster track in their efforts to transform their graphic novels into platforms that include movies, TV and games.

Chopra and Devarajan have created graphic novels with a list of creatives that include John Woo, Shekhar Kapur, Deepak Chopra, Nicolas Cage, Jonathan Mostow and Guy Ritchie. They made a Warner Bros. deal for “Gamekeeper,” which Ritchie is attached to direct, and “Voodoo Child” with Cage’s Saturn Films and Reliance, among other pacts.
