Duo takes the family approach

Dummer, Saade oversee kid-friendly TV

Reality television that the whole family can enjoy is the niche carved out by Vicki Dummer and John Saade, vice presidents of alternative series, specials and latenight at ABC Entertainment Group.

“Our biggest shows: ‘Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,’ ‘Dancing With the Stars,’ ‘Wipeout’ — kids can watch, and parents and grandparents can enjoy as well,” Dummer says.

The two have been colleagues for several years, during which Saade was instrumental in acquiring, developing and overseeing hits like “Dancing” and “The Bachelor.” Dummer oversaw “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” and “Supernanny.”

With the departure of boss Andrea Wong two years ago, the duo had the opportunity to spearhead the department. They collaborate on the development phase and then oversee individual projects.

One of their latest shows for cross-generational audiences is “Shaq Vs.,” where the All-Star center challenges top athletes in their respective sports.

“The genre still is the wild West, and no one can define it,” Saade says. “Every time there’s a new hit, it changes it.”
