Senior VP produced 'Deadliest Catch,' 'Mythbusters'
Discovery Channel development/production senior VP Gena McCarthy has ankled the cabler. There’s no word yet on what McCarthy, who was based at Discovery’s Silver Spring HQ, may land next. Discovery declined to elaborate on the exec’s exit; speculation on McCarthy’s departure centers on a recent structural reorg at the channel. McCarthy was named to her most recent post a year ago and was charged with scouting for original program ideas as well as overseeing the channel’s primetime and daytime program development teams. McCarthy rejoined Discovery earlier in 2008 as VP of development and current, launching shows such as “Extreme Loggers,” “Time Warp” and “Destroyed in Seconds.” Before that, McCarthy was at WE TV, working in development and production on shows such as “Bridezillas,” “Amazing Wedding Cakes” and “High School Confidential.” During an earlier eight-year stint at Discovery and sister TLC, McCarthy was an exec producer on “Deadliest Catch,” “Junkyard Mega-Wars,” “Dirty Jobs” and “Mythbusters.” McCarthy’s departure is seemingly unrelated to this week’s announcement that former Fox exec Peter Liguori would join Discovery Communications as chief operating officer. Liguori is overseeing marketing, Discovery Studios, business affairs and other functions for Discovery Channel’s parent company, which programs 13 domestic channels.
