Actual Reality pacts with Evolution Media
R.J. Cutler’s Actual Reality Pictures is evolving.
The company, which is enjoying theatrical success with its well-received docu “The September Issue,” has cut a deal with Evolution Media to co-produce the nonscripted TV projects that Actual Reality has in the hopper at MTV, Bravo, TruTV and Sony Pictures TV.
Evolution, headed by prexy Douglas Ross, will have a first-look option on future projects from Cutler’s shingle.
Cutler said the deal stemmed from his interest in focusing strictly on creative matters and finding a partner to handle the management and business aspects of production.
“For me the real satisfaction of the work is in the creative,” Cutler told Daily Variety. “Douglas and I have known each other a long time, and this partnership seemed like a great opportunity for both of us.”
Evolution is a long-established indie in the nonscripted arena, known for Bravo’s “Real Housewives of Orange County” series, among others.
Ross said the pact was structured to give both shingles “tremendous flexibility” while allowing them “to take advantage of synergies and at the same time pursue our own interests.”
Actual Reality’s development prospects include a docusoap at Bravo and what Cutler described as a “large-scale competition program” for MTV. He’s also pursuing projects involving the fashion industry, after being steeped in haute couture while following Anna Wintour and her team at Vogue for “September Issue.”
