CBS inks writer Ken Sanzel

'Numbers' scribe gets two-year, seven-figure deal

Scribe Ken Sanzel has inked a two-year, seven-figure overall deal with CBS Television Studios.

Pact calls for Sanzel to develop projects for the studio and to remain showrunner of the Eye/CBS Television Studios drama “Numbers” so long as it is renewed for a fifth season. If not, Sanzel will be rerouted to another CBS Television Studios production.

Sanzel has been with “Numbers,” the egghead procedural starring David Krumholtz and Rob Morrow, since early in its run. He came onboard as a script doctor but was on staff by episode nine. He’s been at the helm as showrunner-exec producer since its third season.

Sanzel said he was happy to renew his ties to the Eye’s studio in part because it has supported the convention-bending quirkiness of “Numbers” and because it has recently expanded into the original cable series realm, where he is interested in fielding some development projects.

“CBS (Television Studios) has given us a lot of opportunity to experiment and be creative with ‘Numbers,’ ” Sanzel said. “And it’s important to me to be able to develop for network and cable.”

Sanzel first made his mark as a feature scribe with 1998’s “The Replacement Killers.” Before “Numbers,” his primetime credits include the short-lived Fox skeins “Jonny Zero” and “Lawless.” He’s also helmed episodes of “Numbers” and the 1999 pilot “Dodge’s City.”
