Network picks up classic gameshow
CBS is choosing what’s behind door No. 2.Net has picked up the classic gameshow “Let’s Make a Deal” and will likely put it in the daytime slot soon to be vacated by “Guiding Light.” Eye had shot a pilot with Wayne Brady as host. Brady, who is expected to get the job, has gameshow experience with Fox’s “Don’t Forget the Lyrics.” The net had also been testing gameshow classics “The Dating Game” and “$100,000 Pyramid,” either of which might come back at some point. Hourlong sudser “Guiding Light,” produced by Procter & Gamble, had a 72-year run as both a radio and television program, and will air its final episode Sept. 18. Daytime soap operas have been on the decline for years and networks are trying to find new ways to fill the daypart. “Let’s Make a Deal,” on which contestants dress in costume and test their luck to win cash and prizes, was a gameshow mainstay hosted by Monty Hall from 1963 into the early ’90s, mostly on ABC. There were also specials and syndicated versions. Billy Bush hosted an ill-fated attempt to bring back the show in primetime in 2003. “Deal” will be produced by FremantleMedia North America, which also owns the Eye’s most successful gameshow, “The Price Is Right.” CBS could introduce the show at the Television Critics Assn. press tour today.
