Canal Plus Spain takes ‘Millennium’

Film and TV series a blockbuster in Sweden

Spanish premium paybox Canal Plus Spain has taken exclusive Spanish pay TV rights to the three films and six TV movies making up blockbuster Swedish fiction franchise “Millennium,” based on the novels by Steig Larsson.

The first movie, “Millennium: Men Who Hate Women,” will bow May 29, distribbed by indie Vertigo Films. It has already grossed E26 million ($34.6 million) in Scandinavia.

Produced by Sweden’s Yellow Bird and sold internationally by Marathon, both owned by the DeAgostini’s pan-Euro Zodiak Group, “Millennium” was originally conceived as a three-part miniseries adaptation of Larsson’s trilogy of novels.

Boffo B.O. results for the movie adaptation of the first novel means that “Millennium” will yield another two features.
