Francis takes over as head of Sky Sports

LONDON — BSkyB sports topper Vic Wakeling, who has ensured the paybox’s dominance of live U.K. soccer for 15 years, is retiring at the end of June.

Seasoned Sky Sports exec Barney Francis will take over as managing director of Sky Sports, reporting to CEO Jeremy Darroch.

BSkyB built its success to a large degree on live exclusive coverage of English Premier League soccer.

Sophie Turner-Laing is also being promoted, adding news to her portfolio. She becomes managing director for entertainment and news, with head of Sky News, John Ryley, reporting to her.
