TNT nabs NBC auds with 'Closer' preem

With “The Bachelorette” picking up steam, ABC moved into a share of first place in demos with CBS on the first Monday of June, as the Eye was powered by repeats of “Two and a Half Men” and “The Big Bang Theory” in its new timeslot.

NBC hung in there but settled for third place on a night that TNT likely stole away some broadcast viewers with the season premiere of “The Closer.”

According to preliminary nationals from Nielsen, ABC’s two-hour “The Bachelorette” (2.5 rating/7 share in adults 18-49, 7.2 million viewers overall) shot up by more than 10% week to week, with its gains corresponding with declines for NBC’s two-hour “I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here” (2.0/6 in 18-49, 5.2 million viewers overall). “Celebrity,” which is airing three or four times each week, was down more than 25% from its week-earlier premiere to finish third in its timeslot among young adults.

At CBS, 9 o’clock laffer “Two and a Half Men” was the night’s top program even in repeat (2.9/8 in 18-49, 9.5 million viewers overall), and “The Big Bang Theory” looked good in its bow in its intended fall timeslot of 9:30 p.m. (2.7/7 in 18-49, 7.8 million viewers overall). In Monday’s opening hour, the net was competitive with encores of “The Big Bang Theory” (2.1/7 in 18-49, 6.6 million viewers overall) and “How I Met Your Mother” (2.0/6 in 18-49, 5.8 million viewers overall).

Fox garnered nothing-special scores for repeats of its dramas “House” (1.9/6 in 18-49, 5.8 million viewers overall) and “Bones” (1.6/4 in 18-49, 5.6 million viewers overall).

The 10 o’clock hour was tightly contested in the 18-49 demo, with CBS repeat drama “CSI: Miami” (2.1/6 in 18-49, 8.1 million viewers overall) tying NBC’s Monday premiere of “Dateline” (2.1/6 in 18-49, 6.7 million viewers overall). ABC’s “Here Come the Newlyweds” was just a tick behind (2.0/6 in 18-49, 4.8 million viewers overall).

In latenight, NBC’s “Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien” edged out CBS’ “Late Show With David Letterman” (3.1/8 to 3.0/8) in Nielsen’s metered-market overnight household averages. Letterman closed the gap thanks to an appearance by reliable ratings-getter Howard Stern.

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: ABC and CBS, 2.3/7; NBC, 2.0/6; Fox, 1.7/5; Univision, 1.6/5; CW, 0.4/1.

In total viewers: CBS, 7.7 million; ABC, 6.4 million; NBC and Fox, 5.7 million; Univision, 4.1 million; CW, 0.9 million.
