Abate heads off to 3 Arts

Former Endeavor exec to head book division

3 Arts Entertainment has hired former Endeavor publishing head Richard Abate to establish the management-production company’s first dedicated book division and to open a New York office.

The deal made by 3 Arts partners Erwin Stoff and David Miner absorbs CreativeWorks, the company that Abate started after he left Endeavor before that agency’s merger with WMA. Abate was hired away from ICM in early 2007 to establish Endeavor’s first book department.

Reports had Abate clashing with WME publishing chiefs Jennifer Rudolph Walsh and Suzanne Gluck, but Abate said the fireworks weren’t as dramatic as reported.

“I’ve known Suzanne and Jennifer for years and have great respect for them and consider them friends,” Abate told Daily Variety. “I just didn’t see the direction of the department working for me. 3 Arts is a smaller, dynamic company that will allow me to continue doing the kinds of things I did at Endeavor.”

Among the publishing clients Abate brings is “Heroes” creator Tim Kring, Judah Friedlander, Mitch Zuckoff, Tracy Morgan, Artie Lange, Lisi Harrison, Melissa De La Cruz, and “Generation Kill” author Evan Wright. Several of those clients were managed by 3 Arts, which allowed Abate to forge a good relationship with the company.

3 Arts had New York headquarters years ago, until Miner and partner Dave Becky headed West. Abate will serve as the Gotham-based liaison for the company’s Hollywood talent stable, something that made the 3 Arts offer more attractive to him.

“3 Arts has always taken pride in representing innovative intellectual property and finding commercial value in it,” Stoff said.

Moreover, Abate will give 3 Arts clients greater opportunities to branch out into books.

“We already have great histories of working with Richard and having New York offices, so to rehang our shingle there with him is a natural fit,” Miner said.
