Showtime zeroes in on ‘Ronna,’ ‘Side’

Cable network eyes series pickups

Showtime is zeroing in on new series pickups, with strong contenders said to be comedy “Ronna & Beverly” and Tim Robbins-produced drama “Possible Side Effects.”

Execs are currently screening pilots in Gotham. It’s understood that the pay cabler has passed on “End of Steve,” dark comedy produced by and starring Matthew Perry, and “The Farm,” an “L Word” spinoff from producer Ilene Chaiken.

Sources said the network is making its series picks from a total of four completed pilots. Showtime is expected to pick up one or two new series for this year.

The cabler officials had no comment.

Produced by Lionsgate TV, “Ronna & Beverly” comes from “Weeds” creator/exec producer Jenji Kohan and revolves around the antics of two middle-aged Jewish women in Boston.

Produced and helmed by Robbins, “Possible Side Effects” stars Josh Lucas and is about a wealthy but dysfunctional family operating in the pharmaceutical biz.
