'United States' nabs nearly 900,000 viewers
Showtime’s new skein about a woman with multiple personalities drew a multiplicity of viewers Sunday night, besting the pay cabler’s previous series bows for “Dexter,” “Weeds” and “The Tudors.”
“United States of Tara,” produced by Steven Spielberg, penned by Diablo Cody and starring Toni Collette, garnered 881,000 viewers for its initial airing at 10 p.m. following the final-season bow of “The L Word.”
Showtime researchers noted that “Tara’s” viewership for the night swells to 1.5 million with on-demand platforms factored in and to 2.5 million when also accounting for copious broadband sampling of the pilot prior to premiere date.
For its part, “The L Word” tallied 664,000 viewers Sunday for its initial run, besting January 2008’s season five bow by 44%. Meanwhile, leading out of “Tara” at 10:30, the season-two premiere of “Secret Diary of a Call Girl” was up 7% over its season-one bow, averaging 558,000 viewers.
