Five-part documentary premieres Sept. 16
Showtime is teaming with the NFL to produce the five-part documentary “Full Color Football: The History of the American Football League.”NFL Films is producing the doc, which premieres Sept. 16 on Showtime. Had it survived, the AFL would have been 50 this fall. Doc is the first for Showtime’s sports division. The cabler has close ties with the NFL, and began airing the weekly skein “Inside the NFL” in 2008 after the series’ long run on HBO. The AFL was an upstart to the more established NFL. In the 1960s, personalities such as Kansas City Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt, Oakland Raiders coach John Madden and New York Jets quarterback Joe Namath were instrumental in helping the NFL and AFL merge. “This is the quintessential underdog story in both sports and business,” said Ken Hershman, senior VP and g.m. of Showtime Sports.
