'Weeds' writer signs seven-figure deal
Lionsgate is high on “Weeds” scribe Matthew Salsberg, who has sealed a seven-figure overall deal with the studio’s TV division.
Two-year production and development pact comes as overall deals are increasingly tough to get. Salsberg will continue on “Weeds” as a co-exec producer of the show’s upcoming fifth season and will be bumped up to exec producer on season six, which Showtime has already picked up.
He will also create and develop comedies for Lionsgate.
“Weeds” has been “the most enjoyable and rewarding experience of my career,” Salsberg said. Lionsgate’s had a rough week, with a bad earnings report and news that it had lost financing on several films. Salsberg’s credits include HBO’s “Entourage” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm”; he also penned the 2007 pilot “Me and Lee” for Fox. He joined “Weeds” as a co-producer in the show’s first season.
The “Weeds” writing team, including Salsberg, was recently nominated for a Writers Guild kudo in the TV comedy writing category.
