Planet Green lineup includes Begley

Cabler nabs 13 new episodes of 'Living with Ed'

Ed Begley Jr.’s environmentally friendly “Living With Ed” lives on, but this time on Planet Green.

Planet Green had been airing repeats of “Ed” (which originally bowed on HGTV) since its launch last year; now, the cabler has picked up 13 new half-hour episodes of the show.

“Ed,” which bows Oct. 21 on Planet Green, will once again follow Begley and his wife, Rachelle, as they attempt to live by his eco-minded ways.

New Planet Green prexy-g.m. Laura Michalchyshyn will make the announcement today during Discovery’s portion of the TV Critics Assn. press tour in Pasadena.

Michalchyshyn also will highlight her initiative to redefine Planet Green’s mission. The topper is looking to broaden the channel’s programming scope beyond how-to programs and into more storytelling, all of which will still have an environmental filter.

The development approach “will reflect the state of our world, our impact on the planet and our place in it,” she said. “(This) allows us to push the boundaries of our storytelling.”

A branding makeover is also forthcoming.

Projects in the works include “Beekman Farms,” which follows a gay couple from Gotham who purchased a farm in upstate New York — despite their lack of farming expertise. World of Wonder produces.

Another one, from Radical Media, revolves around inventor Dean Kamen, who looks to save the world through science.

“The Last Beekeeper,” from Passion Dist., looks at how five beekeepers struggle as their livelihood is threatened by the global disappearance of honeybees.

Film Garden Ent. is behind “Bake and Destroy,” which centers on the drama inside the nation’s first certified organic bakery. And “Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission,” from Greif Co., follows authorities in the Everglades as they hunt poachers.

Planet Green also plans to run the pilot “Buffalo Warriors,” from Authentic Ent., in the fall. The show centers on volunteers who work to protect the last herd of free-roaming buffalo in the U.S., in Yellowstone National Park.

Besides “Ed,” new series set to air this fall include “Ultimate Power Builders,” “Coolfuel,” “Planet Mechanics,” “The 100 Mile Challenge” and “Nature Inc.” “World’s Greenest Homes” returns in January.
