Son of actor Joel McCrea
Jody McCrea, son of actor Joel McCrea who appeared in Westerns and beach party movies, died of cardiac arrest April 4 in Roswell, N.M. He was 74.
McCrea appeared with his father in TV Western “Wichita Town,” and went on to appear in Western films “The Broken Land,” “Young Guns of Texas,” “Law of the Lawless,” “Young Fury” and “Cry Blood, Apache.”
He turned from the sands of the desert to the sands of the beach with 1963’s “Beach Party,” co-starring Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon. He went on to appear in “Muscle Beach Party,” “Bikini Beach,” “Pajama Party,” “Beach Blanket Bingo” and “How to Stuff a Wild Bikini,” playing the character known as Deadhead and then as Bonehead.
McCrea also played a motorcycle gang leader in 1968 AIP biker film “The Glory Stompers.” He retired from acting in the 1970s and moved to New Mexico, where he became a cattle rancher.
McCrea is survived by brothers Peter and David and two stepchildren. His wife, actress Dusty Iron Wing McCrea, died in 1996.
