HBO nabs the Neistats

Network acquires autobiographical series

HBO has acquired an independently made autobiographical series produced by and starring Gotham-based fraternal filmmaking duo Casey and Van Neistat.

The pay cabler has purchased eight completed episodes of “The Neistat Brothers,” which revolves around the lives and careers of the siblings. All episodes were shot on consumer-grade cameras and narrated and edited by the Neistats using off-the-shelf iMovie software.

The first episode features Van Neistat meeting his biological father while his brother makes a movie with his 9-year-old son.

Describing the project as “innovative,” a network source listed Tom Scott as exec producer. Scott is the founder of the Nantucket Nectars beverage company and the Plum TV network, which has incubated several Neistat brothers projects. Casey and Van Neistat will serve as co-exec producers. Christine Vachon will serve as consulting producer.

In 2003, the brothers made the consumer activist documentary film “iPod’s Dirty Secret,” criticizing Apple’s handling of the battery technology in its portable music devices.
