Brooke oversaw 11 local channels
LONDON — In a surprise move, the head of Discovery U.K. has ankled — apparently without another job to go to.
Dan Brooke, who joined Discovery in 2005 from Channel 4 where he ran the digital channels portfolio, oversaw some 11 channels in the U.K. and is regarded as one of the rising stars of the British TV community.
In a statement to staff, Discovery Networks international prexy and CEO Greg Ricca thanked Brooke for his “strong leadership in one of the most competitive television markets in the world.”
He added that Brooke, who was promoted last year to executive VP and managing director of Discovery U.K., had been the “driving force” behind the launch of new brands, including Discovery HD, Discovery Knowledge and DMAX.
Ricca also praised Brooke for helping to secure Discovery’s first channel slot on Freeview, the hugely successful U.K. digital terrestrial platform. Entitled Quest, the web is expected to launch in the first half of this year.
Discovery is to start the search for a successor immediately.
Recently, Discovery’s U.K. wing has come increasingly under the leadership of the U.S.-based operation.
