The multitasker spearheads major music label

It’s not all that rare for someone from music’s creative spectrum to receive a titular gig in the executive ranks. But aside from vanity imprints, few ascend to the top of the heap. In this regard, Amanda Ghost — who took over the presidency of Epic Records in February after a decade as a performer and songwriter with songs such as James Blunt’s “You’re Beautiful” to her credit — stands apart.

“Because I did run my own company while I was writing for these artists, I did consider myself a businesswoman as well,” says the Londoner, born Amanda Gosein. “But I do think that my being in this position tells talent that we are a uniquely artist-friendly company.”

Ghost has borne that out by nurturing a diverse roster that includes such tenured acts as Incubus and Chevelle as well as developing artists like Ireland’s the Script (who garnered a coveted spot as an opening act on Paul McCartney’s recent stadium tour) and Sean Kingston.

Of the latter performer, she says, “He’s traditionally been seen as a singles artist, but he wants to make the transition to more album-oriented things, and that’s something we’re working on on a number of levels.”

Ghost has, to some degree, been hands-on in helping Kingston make that move, as well as shaping future plans for Epic’s extensive Michael Jackson catalog, but she’s been up to her elbows in the coming releases by a pair of artists she’s written for and with in the past: Shakira and Jennifer Lopez.

“I was working on the new Shakira (album) before coming over to Sony, and it’s been wonderful to see it take shape, as both a creative partner and a business partner,” she says. “I have a fantastic team in place that has really embraced me, which has made that transition much easier in an age of fractured platforms where the old rules don’t apply any longer. It’s an exciting time to be in this position.”
