Urban act Calle 13 leads field with five noms
Puerto Rican urban act Calle 13 leads the field for the 10th Latin Grammy Awards with five nominations.
Noms were announced Thursday for this year’s ceremony, to be held Nov. 5 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas and telecast live by Univision.
Five-time Latin Grammy winner Calle 13’s “Los de atras vienen conmigo” is up for album of the year, while its “No hay naide como tu” was tagged in the record of the year category.
Other nominees in the album of the year category include Colombian vocalist Andres Cepeda for “Dia tras dia”; Nicaraguan Luis Enrique for “Ciclos”; Brazilian star Ivan Lins and the Metropole Orchestra for “Regencia: Vince Mendoza”; and Argentine singer Mercedes Sosa for “Cantora 1.”
Record of the year slot includes Lins’ “Arlequim desconhecido”; Puerto Rican Luis Fonsi’s “Aqui estoy yo”; Puerto Rican band Jose Lugo Orchestra’s “Si no vas a cocinar”; and multilingual Italian vocalist Laura Pausini’s “En cambio no.”
New artist nods went to Mexican singer-songwriter Alexander Acha, Colombian trio Chocquibtown, Florida-based Claudio Corsi, Spanish flamenco singer India Martinez and Mexican vocalist Luz Rios.
Voted by members of the Latin Recording Academy, the 2009 Latin Grammys will dole out awards in 49 categories, many of them acknowledging achievement in a variety of musical subgenres. Latin music also has its own field in the annual Grammy Awards.
