Michael Jackson disc sells 373,000 copies

After dominating the world box office last weekend, the late Michael Jackson ascended to No. 1 on the U.S. album charts with the CD companion to the film “This Is It.”

Despite its paucity of new material, the Epic collection roared to the top with first-week sales of 373,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan figures for the week ended Sunday.

Album is the first new Jackson product since the singer’s death in June. His catalog releases have sold more than 5.6 million units this year.

“Full Circle,” the first album in eight years by the grungy Florida band Creed, entered at No. 2. The New Windup Records collection by the regrouped act tracked 110,000 in its first frame.

Just one week shy of a year on the chart, Taylor Swift’s “Fearless” (Big Machine) bounded up four positions to No. 3 after its 109,000-unit week. Country-pop singer’s collection was stoked by a new edition containing previously unreleased songs.

Rod Stewart’s new collection of R&B covers “Soulbook” (J Records) arrived at No. 4. Vet singer’s interpretations of classics by Jackie Wilson, the Four Tops, the Miracles, Stevie Wonder and others tallied 84,000 sales out of the box.

Perennial holiday favorites Trans-Siberian Orchestra pulled in at No. 5 with its latest seasonal package, “Night Castle” (Atlantic). Two-CD set debuted with 83,000 sold.

Another yule-themed package, Sting’s “If on a Winter’s Night” (Deutsche Grammophon), bowed at No. 6. Former Police man’s Christmas collection reaped sales of 80,000.

Rest of the week’s top 10 comprises declining titles from previous weeks: Michael Buble’s “Crazy Love” (No. 7, 71,000 units, off 30%), the “Twilight: New Moon” soundtrack (No. 8, 69,000, off 55%), Tim McGraw’s “Southern Voice” (No. 9, 59,000, off 57%) and Jay-Z’s “The Blueprint 3″ (No. 10, 41,000, off 5%).

The soundtrack for the musical TV hit “Glee” and a new album by American Idol champ Carrie Underwood will make their chart debuts next week.
