Giovanna Mezzogiorno bows out of sequel
Italo helmer Gabriele Muccino has quasi-hero position in his home country, where his Will Smith starrer “Seven Pounds” recently opened to boffo B.O.
But his heavyweight status hasn’t stopped actress Giovanna Mezzogiorno from brusquely bowing out of his planned sequel of “The Last Kiss,” the generational tragicomedy that launched both their careers, claiming that Muccino’s “Kiss” sequel is “unconvincing.”
That could put a kink in “Kiss Me Again,” given that the marketing hook for Muccino’s 10-years-later project was it would reunite the entire original cast.
“In this profession it’s important to do what you believe in,” says Mezzogiorno, who played the pregnant and betrayed Giulia in the original “Kiss.”
“I think we and the audience will both survive without Giovanna,” assures producer Domenico Procacci, who says “Kiss Me Again,” which marks Muccino’s return to his native roots, will be the helmer’s next project.
