Whoopi, Martin Short to host comedy fest's Gala
Whoopi Goldberg, Martin Short and Lewis Black will host Galas at the 27th Montreal Just for Laughs Comedy Festival, which unveiled its indoor ticketed line-up on Tuesday.
Goldberg will host the July 24 Gala, Short will appear July 25 and Black on July 23.
Monty Python alumnus John Cleese will also be on-hand to host a British Gala on July 22 with a line-up including Ross Noble, Jimmy Carr, Mark Watson, Danny Bhoy, Gina Yashere and Idiots of Ants.
Louis CK, Louie Anderson, Jeff Ross, Caroline Rhea, Robert Schimmel and David Alan Grier from “Dancing With the Stars” will take part in the All-Star Gala on July 26.
Schimmel will also bring his one-man show, “Cheaters Get Cancer,” while Louis CK will headline a solo show at the Metropolis nightclub.
Fest, which runs July 16 to 26 at various venues, will also include Bill Cosby at Place des Arts July 25 and Italian helmer and thesp Roberto Benigni will present his one-man show “Tutto Dante” in French and Italian.
Popular Canuck funnyman Russell Peters will headline at the Bell Center July 24 as part of his 20th Anniversary Tour.
Fest will feature the world preem of “Reverie,” collaboration between fest and Second City Theatricals directed by Dexter Bullar that showcases comic improvisers and sketch performers.
Ireland’s Tommy Tiernan brings his solo show “Eh,” Judy Gold returns with her one-woman show “Mommy Queerest,” and Elon Gold presents “Half Jewish, Half Very Jewish.”
In addition, fest will launch Chaos Montreal, a spin-off event that runs concurrently and will include 120 artists in more than 50 shows covering theater, dance, comedy, circus and music plus a selection of shows from Scotland’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
The Just for Laughs industry conference will take place July 23-24.
