Officer to exit Actors' Equity in two weeks

Mark S. Zimmerman has resigned as prexy of thesp union Actors’ Equity. The org’s first VP, Paige Price, will assume his duties while retaining her previous title.

In a statement Zimmerman (“West Side Story”) attributed the move to his desire to pursue his acting career more fully and to spend more time with his partner.

At first glance the timing of his exit seems curious given that the org’s exec director, John P. Connolly, left his post less than two weeks ago for what Connolly said were similar reasons.

A rep for Equity said no internal turmoil is indicated by the rapid-fire departures despite appearances.

Zimmerman has been prexy of Equity since 2006, when he assumed the post after Patrick Quinn left it to become exec director. (Quinn’s untimely death led to Connolly’s tenure.)

A 401(k) plan for its members and regional meetings for the org’s long-range planning are among Zimmerman’s achievements as prexy, according to Equity. He served as first VP from 2000-06.

He would have been up for re-election in 2011. It’s not clear when an election for the position will be held, although there is a possibility it will occur in spring.
