Director will take on Randy Newman tuner in L.A.

Jerry Zaks will direct the world premiere of Randy Newman tuner “Harps and Angels” for L.A. Center Theater Group, according to a statement from a.d. Michael Ritchie.

Based on the music of America’s fave songwriters, “Harps and Angels” is the final production of the org’s 2010-11 season. It will run Nov. 10-Dec. 19, 2010, at the Mark Taper Forum.

Songs on the tuner include Newman’s “I Think It’s Going to Rain Today,” “Sail Away,” “Marie,” “Rednecks,” “My Country,” “Louisiana 1927,” “Feels Like Home,” “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” and “I Love L.A.”

Conceived by Jerry Viertel with musical staging by Warren Carlyle, “Harps and Angels” is a commentary on what it’s like to be born, live and die in the U.S.
