Vegas’ Smith Center given greenlight

Performing Arts facility set to break ground

LAS VEGAS — Despite a sluggish Sin City economy, the Smith Center for the Performing Arts has been given the greenlight.

The ground-breaking ceremony for the city’s first performing arts facility is skedded for Tuesday morning in the downtown district.

Targeting tourists and locals alike, the two-building center will be home to the Las Vegas Philharmonic and Nevada Ballet Theatre. Plans are to stage a variety of national and international touring productions.

Designed to be multifunctional and flexible, the venue will house a main theater of 2,050 seats, a 300-seat cabaret theater for more intimate productions and a 200-seat studio theater suitable for rehearsals and community theater.

The $245 million project is located on a 61-acre tract of land across from the Clark County Government Center, with the complex set to open in the first quarter of 2012.
