‘Understudy’ to premiere in New York

Comedy will stage at the Roundabout Theater

Theresa Rebeck’s comedy “The Understudy” will receive its New York preem in a Roundabout Theater Company production toplined by Julie White.

Scott Ellis directs the Off Broadway staging after helming the show’s world preem at the Williamstown Theater Fest last summer.

Backstage laffer centers on a newly discovered play by Franz Kafka, produced on Broadway with two action-pic heroes in the cast. White will play the stage manager.

No further casting has been announced. Kristen Johnston, Bradley Cooper and Reg Rogers (in the title role) appeared in the Williamstown incarnation.

Rebeck (“Mauritius”) is represented Off Broadway with the Playwrights Horizons production of “Our House.”

White, who picked up a Tony for her perf in “The Little Dog Laughed,” currently has a role in the Shakespeare in the Park production of “Twelfth Night.”

Ellis (“Streamers”) leads a creative team that also includes Alexander Dodge (sets), Tom Broecker (costumes), Kenneth Posner (lights) and Obadiah Eaves (music and sound). Production begins previews at the Roundabout’s Laura Pels Theater Oct. 9 ahead of a Nov. 5 opening.
